Wash Day Horror: Lost All My Relaxed Hair!

It's happened again! I've lost my hair due to my own carelessness...lots and lot of my hair and I'm wondering whether to cut it all off and start over, go natural (yes, I'm highly considering it under these circumstances) or just cut off the thinnest parts and continue. Want to know the details? Here goes......

I was just silly. I've always had issues with wash day in a salon or with other people's hands and for years now, I do my own hair. Even with doing my own hair, the right way,  I still have tangles to deal with. So a friend seeing my hair after so long a while went the usual " wow, it's so thick" , "eiiiiiiii, it's grown papa" (it's grown so much), and all that and offered to wash and style it for me. Not a hairdresser, but loves to do people's hair including my daughter, and does it very well; and had been offering to do mine for ages. Well, I explained as usual how I don't wash my hair anyhow and how it must be in sections and all the hair care mantra, but she insisted to do it carefully and my hair will be fine. So I finally agreed.

We detangled thoroughly and combed through to ensure there were no tangles. Then we went to wash, without me braiding in sections as she insisted my hair was too smelly for sections to be clean while in braids. Well it was really smelly so I accepted. It didn't take 5 minutes in the shower to realise that was a BIG, BIG, BIG MISTAKE. My hair matted and tangled so bad in many places especially the crown, like nothing I have ever experienced yet right after shampooing and we both tried everything to remove the clamps. Detangler, oil, double deep conditioning, picking at the tangles with a needle....my oh my nothing worked and we were at it for hours. Myself, my friend and my nanny. Oh, we did everything to no avail. Finally, my friend left promising to come help next day, offering apologies but I knew nothing will work anyways and didn't want to make her feel any worse than she felt so just told her it was nothing and I'll just work on it. Later with the help of my nanny,  we had to cut through some of the knots with a razor to save some strands and had to cut off a big chunk in my crown down to about 4 inches because nothing we tried worked at the knots.

As you can see from my face, I had little sleep that night as I stayed up till almost midnight trying to work the tangles out as doing so the next day would only make it worse. The line of demarcation now shows so clearly cos my ends are really see-through now. Time to chop chop chop ......and go fully texlaxed or natural (still thinking). As I wrote this post, my memory card corrupted and all I have are these pixs I sent to one of my hair buddies earlier. My hair is in plaits now and at the weekend, will take time to do a better photo story.

Oh, how I wish that day hadn't come, how did this happen, had I known, ......*quickly removes that thought* especially the first one!! That day not coming, no no no....each day is wonderful and no matter how bad it turns out, we need to appreciate once we wake up from bed, we live to fight another and victory will surely be ours one day! Looking back at the last time my hair was free, it was really, really thick with struggling ends and just a huge trim would have been all I needed. Now , I don't know what to expect after the cut. I am only looking forward to some vitamins and biotin I ordered from the US arriving soon after my cut so I can grow this hair right back. But, we focus not on the past, but we look forward to embrace new beginnings. That's just how I feel right now. I've lost nothing at all.

So, I'm moving forward and thankful I'm not totally bald. I need a huge cut. All the way close to the new growth I have because I lost a lot of texlaxed hair as well...My hair now is the thinnest in years but thank God I have about 2-3 inches of new growth. Well, I had already planned going fully texlaxed after my next texlax and have brand new scissors just for the job. So I'm sad, but not to tears...*I'm surprised I didn't even shed a single tear*  but I'm just going to seize the opportunity to just do the big chop once and for all. I'm going to follow the Lunar hair cutting days to lengthen which are 28th and 29th February. Can't wait and hopefully, I'll film it for my Youtube channel

Which way should I go? Natural or Texlaxed?

Cheers,
Star.

PYHC : Mega Moisture Mini Challenge

Hi hairdies,

Let the pampering begin!! I'm super -excited and so are the wonderful ladies in the challenge. We just can't stop thinking about how awesome our hair will become by the end of the challenge. Once we can think it, and dream it...and do what we need to do, we will have it!

Most of us have our hair growing all the time, no matter how slow; it still grows. The challenge is how to retain length. The key to retaining length is breakage control. And one practice that a lot of ladies take for granted is the importance of moisturising and sealing. So we'll start from there!

Mega Moisture Mini Challenge

Aim: To keep hair ends moisturised, reduce dryness, brittleness and breakage.

Rules:

1. Wash hair at least once a week with preferably a sulfate free or low sulfate shampoo.

2. Deep condition after every wash preferably with a mild protein conditioner.

3. Airdry only. No heat.

4. Moisturise with a water-based moisturiser and seal with an oil or cream.

5. Keep ends tucked away always. Buns or Faux bobs are easy low-manipulation styles you can wear.

6. Check in every week by posting your photo preferably of your ends to facebook or instagram using the hashtag #ghpamperyourhair2015.

7. This mini challenge ends on 12th March, 2015.

Hair after moisturising and sealing.

afroriri hair butter
Afroriri Luxe Hair and Scalp Conditioner
afroriri hair butter
Afroriri Luxe Hair  Butter

I will use the AfroRiri Luxe Hair Butter and AfroRiri Luxe Hair and Scalp Conditioner. I find that using both products; butter first then conditioner to seal.....my hair feels and looks super moisturised, shiny and soft without feeling limp. Once in a while I will use coconut oil to seal to keep split ends under control.

Check-in: Leave a comment below stating the moisturiser and oil you will use during the challenge.

This is me!!

Seven Random Things About Me:

1. I love sleep! Once I was got of university, I just got into the habit of sleeping early. I could no longer stay up to watch movies, read till midnight or spend evenings out. I just preferred sleeping to doing anything else...and still do. *covers face* The only time you find me awake after 8:30pm, on days that I don't have an evening class or close late from work is if my daughter is still up. I'm at a point where it has become a bad habit that I have to overcome. After all, there is more sleep after ...........................!
Wake up girl and burn the midnight candle!

2. I love to talk and talk and talk when I meet new people. That's if they look interested in what I'm saying. And lately, most of the talk is on general well-being and hair growth.

3. I love high heels! But more on my shoe rack than on my feet. I'm not sure if I should blame it on motherhood though, but I'm always in slippers like the above photo almost everywhere I go. I usually take a pair of heels when I have to play a role at a function and wear them only when "it's time". I take them off right after and go back to my slippers. That irritates my hubby but I always tell him "it's not my fault oooooo, I just get tired real fast in heels now". And that is the truth.

4. I suck at sports! The only game I played well years back was lawn tennis...and this was over 10 years ago. Though I have the opportunity to find a soft spot for sports especially lawn tennis again, I just prefer to watch and cheer on.

5. I always dream of South Africa. It's just a country I would love to visit real soon.

6. I love to be cheerful and bubbly. I laugh loads and really loud. My friends and family used to say they just needed to be silent and listen for just a few minutes to find me cos my laughter was like their compass.....hahhahahhahaaahhaha. But, I make it known when someone annoys me real quick and snappy...say all I have to say, then I'm back to being me. No room to dull my shine; I'm a star after all.

7. I have very few material things on my wishlist...most on my list are hair products. I barely think about cars, clothes, shoes and luxury vacations. Many ask me if I want to be rich? I say not really. All I plan to acquire is enough to live a peaceful, nice and happy life after I retire. And I look forward to continuing writing. Oh, yes...I'm already making retirement plans but I just turned 31 yesterday.

Awwwwwwwwwwwww, would have loved to tell you more but that's 7 already....*sob sob*

Star.

Event Giveaways!! ORS Ghana, AfroRiri Haircare, Urban Makes!!

I just can't hide my excitement!! It's 7 days to the meetup!

After publishing my post about the meetup here and on my facebook page, I got a call from ORS Ghana and they proposed to send me some goodies. It's a YES!! I screamed so loud, jumping up and down excitedly in my office. Incidentally, they had an event about 15 minutes drive from where I was to be over the weekend so I proposed I passed by and pick the goodies. And I did!! I drove right there on Saturday afternoon and picked up these goodies for 50 lucky persons!!  Just couldn't wait for them to deliver them.

ORS

Hair Meetup ORS products

And thanks to AfroRiri and Urban Makes who have also promised to send me some products for a post event giveaway which would be open to those who attend the meetup on the 31st of August. Both contacts are away in Nigeria and I am tagging it as a post event giveaway because I might not get the products in time for the meetup. But if I get them in time....hurraaaaaaaaaaaay!! More goodies for giveaways!

There are free tickets available at www.ghlonghair.eventbrite.com for all who want to attend the event. Though the ticket is not needed for entry at the event, it will be used in the giveaway contest. Also, the first 50 persons who registered at the site and get to the venue before the giveaway starts, get the goodies that the Ghana Soap School is giving as well that I will pick up tomorrow! I just can't wait to have all those goodies in my hands.

The post event giveaway details will be given on my Youtube Channel. Please subscribe to get the details and see all that will go down at the meetup. I am very optimistic and looking forward to hosting at least 50 persons at the event.

I can't say enough to thank my family, colleagues, friends, whatsapp family for all the support they have given and continue to give. Since this meetup is not sponsored, it's been basically friends and family giving time, offering technical help and sponsoring the giveaways . God richly bless you abundantly. Let's look forward to greater things in the future............

Have you attended a hair meetup before? Hope you won't miss mine.

Cheers,
Star!

Hair Meetup: Let's Support Each Other!

Hello everyone,

I am super excited my next meetup is coming on at the end of this month. I am especially interested in following up on the hair journeys of everyone who is on a hair journey, and who share their hair stories and pictures with me. It's just nice to meet ladies who love, love, love healthy hair like you, and share tips and product information. And most importantly, it's great to see how much progress everyone is making on their hair journeys. I have made lots of friends on my hair journey, most are like family now, people I chat with everyday...and I am super excited about meeting them for real.

My sincere thanks goes to the Ghana Soap School who sponsored the banner for the event and will give some free products, Sesi Signature Faces who will do the makeup, Apmen Multimedia who will do the video coverage and photographs, African Roots Clothing for making the Ghlonghair length check shirts that will be on sale at the event. There will be hair products on sale by vendors as well so do come along with your shopping list.

Do you have questions such as:
1. Should I go natural or stay relaxed?           2. Why is my hair not growing?  3. Why is my hair breaking?
4. Can I ever have waist length hair?              5. How should I care for my hair?

...and many more? Or do you have answers you want to share? Then be at the meetup.

Here are the details:

hair meetup in Ghana

This event is free!! For more information, you can reach me on +233201979795. Come out in your numbers and let's share our hair stories, share our hair regimens and give each other the support and the encouragement we need. Come and meet ladies who have long, short, natural, relaxed and transitioning hair. Wondering if there will be a giveaway? Of course!!

I would just love to meet you!! Be there!!

Care to Share: Meet Priscilla!

Hello! My name is Priscilla Dwomoh. A lot of people just call me Maame, though. I am a university graduate who is currently undertaking her national service. I love food, good music, my BFF, and of course, hair!

Tell us about your hair : I am currently transitioning from relaxed hair to natural hair and I am one year into my transition already. Yay!! My hair is of the highly porous, thick stranded, medium density variety. It is a tad protein sensitive and just thrives on moisture. It responds well to thick butters and creams and absolutely hates gels. It is gradually warming up to me and soon we’ll be friends! Lol!!

Tell us about your hair journey ….. when you started: Officially, my journey started on the 12th of January 2013 but that’s just to put a date to it. I initially decided to transition because I really didn’t like the way hairdressers here handled hair. I felt they were killing my hair and I wasn’t allowed to say anythingL. So when I discovered transitioning was an option, I literally had a “Hallelujah!” moment. Even before I decided to transition, I had been inadvertently stretching my relaxers for the sole reason that I hated my hairdressers. I stretched 3, 4 months at a time just so I could avoid them. Plus they were sooooo scissor-happy!! Sheesh! Anyway, when I decided to transition I had about 3 months’ worth of new growth. Also around that time, I had become curious about hair colour. So on my official start date, I relaxed and dyed my hair. And I cut it evenly to top of neck length. Notice the relaxing and dyeing took place the same day? Humph! That’s what you get when your stylist doesn’t know enough to be able to advice you on how damaging that is. SMH!! So yeah, that’s why we’re here one year later. Woohoo!

Your regimen, preferably daily, weekly or monthly: My regimen is quite simple. I try to moisturise and seal every day (Naturally, I skip some days). I used to wash and deep condition weekly but I recently decided to tweak that. So now I go 2 weeks if my hair doesn’t feel dirty after a week. I do an ACV rinse every time I take out a protective style. And that’s it I think. O, and I’m constantly experimenting twists and updo styles. I try one every week or so if I can and my hair is out. I’m obsessed with updo’s. Unfortunately my hair not so long yet so there’s not a lot I can try. But soon…. O yes, soon……

     Products you use: LOL! I think it should be products I’ve settled on, rather. I am a recovering product junkie and there’s so much in my stash as you can see and that’s just about half of it. But after trying so many, there are quite a few I’ve settled on;

Shampoo – Gliss by Swarzkopf Oil Nutritive Shampoo with Liquid keratin and protein
Regular conditioner – VO5 and Garnier Fructus Conditioner
              Leave in conditioner – Giovanni
Deep conditioner – Vitale hair mayonnaise. I do not use this alone however. I mix it with honey, regular conditioner, some oils, and coconut milk if I have that on hand.
Moisturiser – Water, some oils and sometimes aloe Vera juice.
Oils – any I can get my hand on. I currently have olive, castor, black castor, jojoba, amla, vitamin e, grapeseed and coconut oils.
Essential oils – Peppermint and Grape fruit
Gels – None I care to mention. They don’t work for me
Butters – Whipped Shea butter and Elasta qp Olive oil and Mango butter moisturiser
Styling creams – My butters double as my styling creams. They are very moisturising but have no hold for my hair type. So my twists don’t last long unless I keep redoing themL. I can’t seem to find any to buy so I welcome all suggestions for this category

Your ultimate and December goals: My goal for this December is have hair that extends to my chin from my crown. Lol! I know that’s not a regular description but that’s exactly what my heart desires. Ultimately, BSL would just make me ecstatic! And if that doesn’t turn out too well, I guess I’ll always have healthy hair to compensate.

Care to Share: Meet Rubie!!

MY JOURNEY TO HEALTHY, SHINY LONG HAIR

hair story feature
My name is Rubie, 29 years old and a travel consultant. I do not know when I started my HHJ but I think it was after I have read a few post on Stella’s blog (http://ghlonghair.blogspot.com/) a few months ago.

I did not know anything about HHJ; all I knew was to go to the salon and have my hair done. I washed my hair with any of those gallon shampoos and conditioners they had in the salon. Will blow dry, flat iron my hair most at times and also wear braids more often. I realized I started losing the hair on my edges and my hairline was badly damaged. I did nothing to grow the hair back but rather kept wearing those tight braids which later left me with a bald hairline. It was so bad that I will fix weaves to hide it. Sometime 2 years ago, I got tired of my hair and went for the big chop. I wanted to start growing my hair all over again but as usual I was back to the same bad hair practices.

I had fine neck length hair which was so thin and was breaking all the time. I was so tired of my hair and was thinking of going for the big chop again when I came across Stella’s blog online whilst I was searching for information on growing healthy hair. I was relieved to read from someone who was a Ghanaian and also knew a lot about growing healthy hair. I started practicing some of the things I read on her blog and I realized some changes in my hair. I then decided to have time for my hair and give it tender loving care in order to achieve my aim. I started by creating a regimen which I initially knew nothing about.  I washed my hair twice a week, deep conditioned; air dried and also started applying some oils to my scalp.

healthy hair journeyhealthy hair journey
So far I think I have done a good job with my hair, it’s growing well and it’s healthier than before. Because I want to retain thickness in my hair, I have started stretching my relaxer days and so far I am 16 weeks post relaxer and aiming at 24 weeks before my next relaxer day.

These are the products I am using now:
healthy hair journey
Crème of Nature Detangling Shampoo

V05 Clarifying Shampoo

ORS Replenishing Conditioner

ORS Wrap Set Lotion

Hawaiian Silky 14 in 1 Miracle Worker

Cantu Shea Butter Leave in Conditioner
